Paula Liffschitz
Today I introduce you to an exceptional woman I interviewed in January 1999: flutist and bandoneonist Paula Liffschitz. Since then, Paula has toured all over the world, in the United States, Europe and much of Latin America.
She played with the Trio Tango Marias during the Olympic Games in Canada.
She founded the Duo Amatango with her husband, the pianist Aldo Saralegui, in which Paula played the flute. Her repertoire consisted mainly of compositions by Aldo. In 1993 they recorded an LP that was nominated for the ACE Award.
She was a member of the ensembles “La movida del tango”. “Los del Abasto”, “China Cruel” and “La siniestra”, among others.
Today she is also a chamber music teacher at the Conservatory of Morón and composes for theater and television productions.
In our conversation in January 1999, Paula Liffschitz told me about the Young Tango Guard, to which she belonged at that time, the role of women in the world of tango and the music that Paula carries in her heart.

“Like I don’t think tango is something terribly macho compared to everything else, it seems to me that it’s part of what everything was, really; that there were no presidents or deputies or masons or lawyers or very little. So I think that openness in tango is not like something specific that in tango, but in everything, in everything there is an opening towards women.
And surely if I had been born a century ago it would not have occurred to me to do tango or do anything other than being a housewife, I do not know if I would have had a very revolutionary spirit, but they were: “I was the woman who did medicine”, then there was “The other who had been …”.
But hey, I on the one hand think it’s that, right? What happens in tango is a reflection of what happens in everything. And then I wonder, I always wonder, if it is so different to make music from a woman than from a man; if you listen to a recording: do you realize if the one who plays is a woman or is it a man? That is, it is not the same as in literature, where perhaps there is one more look at women or there is…
I don’t know if there is a look of the woman as an instrumentalist. The voice is something else, because the voice of a woman and the voice of a man, well, there is a need for one, a need for another; one thing that can express one… But as an instrumentalist, that’s what I wonder, if it sounds different, if a woman has a different personality.
It’s like I don’t really think so. I believe that there are forces in music put it from passion, from sweetness, from play, which are both the property of man and woman; because the woman can have as much anger as a man, so much polenta; you can have more muscle, less developed, but to play the bandoneon you do not need to lift weights, it is not so much; or you can have polenta without needing to have a bodybuilder muscle.”

Paula studies bandoneon with the masters Rodolfo Daluisio, Julio Pane, Néstor Marconi, Pablo Mainetti and Juan José Mosalini. Integrating various orchestras and groups performs in important theaters of the city of Bs. As. and the interior of the country. He also tours internationally in America and Europe and records more than six albums. He has an extensive teaching activity and performs music for theatrical and television shows. |
As a member of the groups Las Del Abasto and China Cruel she recorded the CD “De Ida” and toured France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Ireland, USA, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay, performing at several international festivals. And at the national level; in the Festivals of Bariloche, San Luis, Córdoba, Mendoza, Santa Fe and important halls of the City of Bs. As., such as the Teatros Gral. San Martín, Cervantes, Alvear, Club del Vino, Clásica y Moderna, CC Torcuato Tasso, CC de la Cooperación, among others.
As part of various formations she recorded the CDs “Puente” and “Salto” (La Siniestra Quinteto), “Escuchá lo que te Digo” (Trio) “De madrugada” (Eva Bruna), “De Amores” (Graciela Chaile), participating in others as a guest artist. With the duo Amatango he recorded a CD that was nominated for the ACE awards and made two tours of Latin America.
With the Quartet of Patricia Barone and Javier González she recorded the CDs “Pompeya No Olvida” and “Gestación”, and participates with them in the world summit of Tango in Granada and Bariloche. She also gives concerts in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. He was part of the stable cast of Café de Los Angelitos.
With the trio Tangomaría she was an ambassador of our music in the Olympics of Canada.
She is currently a Teacher of Chamber Music and Musical Appreciation at the Conservatory of Music of Morón.
She composes Music for Theater: “La Edad de la Ciruela” (Puesta de Las Chicas de Blanco) and Music for Television Series “Vidas del Conurbano” and “Tango y Fantasmas” (directed by César D ́Angiolillo). She participates as an instrumentalist in numerous TV and Radio programs.
