He was an Argentine singer-songwriter, guitarist, poet and writer.<!-- P--><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> He is considered the most important Argentine folklore musician. His compositions have been sung by renowned performers, such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tangodiario.com\/en\/podcast\/mercedes-sosa-entrevista\/\">Mercedes Sosa<\/a>,&nbsp;Los Chalchaleros,&nbsp;Horacio Guarany,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmtv.com.ar\/biography\/show.php?bnid=1996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <\/a>Alfredo Zitarrosa, Jos\u00e9 Larralde,&nbsp;Jairo,&nbsp;Andr\u00e9s Calamaro,&nbsp;Divided,&nbsp;Soledad<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmtv.com.ar\/biography\/show.php?bnid=277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tangodiario.com\/en\/podcast\/suma-paz-1938-2009\/\">Suma Paz<\/a>, among many others, and continue to form part of the repertoire of innumerable artists in Argentina and in different parts of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> He made her first musical studies with Father Ros\u00e1enz. Later, from the age of 6, he learned guitar with Bautista Almir\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1917 his family moved to Tucum\u00e1n. At 19 years old, he composed his song &#8220;Camino del Indio&#8221;. He undertook a trip to Jujuy, Bolivia and the Calchaqu\u00ed Valleys. In 1931 he toured Entre R\u00edos, settling for a time in Tala. He passed through Montevideo to then go to the eastern interior and the south of Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"> In 1934 he re-entered Argentina through Entre R\u00edos and settled in Rosario province of Santa Fe. In 1935 he settled in Raco , province of Tucuman. he briefly passed through the city of Buenos Aires, where various performers began to popularize her songs, to perform on the radio. He later toured Santiago del Estero, to return to Raco for a few months in 1936. He made an incursion through Catamarca, Salta and Jujuy. He later visited the Altiplano again in search of testimonies of the old aboriginal cultures. He returned to the Calchaqu\u00ed Valleys, traveled the trails of Jujuy on the back of a mule and lived for a time in Cochangasta, province of La Rioja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">Because of his affiliation with the Communist Party, which lasted until 1952, his work suffered from censorship during the presidency of Juan Domingo Peron; he was arrested and imprisoned several times. He immediately signed a contract with &#8220;Chant du Monde&#8221;, the recording company that published his first LP in Europe, &#8220;Minero soy&#8221;, which obtained the first prize for Best Record of the Charles Cros Academy, which included three hundred and fifty participants from all continents in the International Folklore Contest. Subsequently, he traveled extensively in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1952, Yupanqui returned to Buenos Aires. He broke off relations with the Communist Party, which made it easier to arrange appearances on the radio. While with Nenette, his wife, he was building his house in Cerro Colorado, province of C\u00f3rdoba, Yupanqui travels the country.<!-- P--><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognition of Yupanqui&#8217;s ethnographic work became widespread during the 1960s, and with artists such as&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tangodiario.com\">Mercedes Sosa<\/a>&nbsp;and Jorge Cafrune recorded his compositions and made him popular with younger musicians, who refer to him as Don Ata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Yupanqui alternates between his houses in Buenos Aires and Cerro Colorado. During 1963-1964, he toured Colombia, Japan, Morocco, Egypt, Israel and Italy. In 1967, he toured Spain, and settled in Paris.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Argentina<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>He periodically returned to Argentina and appeared in Argentin\u00edsima II in 1973, but these visits became less frequent when the military dictatorship of Jorge Videla came to power in 1976. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1986 France decorated him as Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. In 1987 he returned to the country to receive a tribute from the University of Tucum\u00e1n.<!-- P--><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He had to go to Buenos Aires in 1989 to overcome a heart condition, despite which in January 1990 he participated in the Cosqu\u00edn Festival. A few days later, Yupanqui fulfilled an artistic commitment in Paris.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> He returned to France in 1992 to perform in N\u00eemes but became indisposed and died there on May 23. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, I was no longer able to interview Atahualpa Yupanqui, this wonderful Argentine singer-songwriter, so poetic and at the same time so political. I heard one of his last concerts in March 1992 at the Volkshaus in Zurich. He was already so weak that someone walked him to his chair and handed him the guitar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Atahualpa Yupanqui died a few weeks later, at the age of 84, in Nimes, at an award ceremony.
