Today I’m talking to the “Gardel with skirts”. This is the popular name of the singer and actress Nelly Omar.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I visited her in January 1999 in a suburb of la provincia de Buenos Aires and was impressed by her elegance and energy. Despite her 88 years she had lost none of her charisma.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nelly was born in Buenos Aires on September 10, 1911. At the age of 13 she didn’t dream of becoming a singer or an actress – she wanted to be a pilot! But it didn’t happen, fortunately for tango and Argentine folklore!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nelly owes her singing career to the popularity of Argentine radio at that time. When Ignazio Corsini heard her sing, he hired her for her radio shows. In 1932 Nelly began to sing for Radio Stentor in a duet with her sister. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Radio Belgrano hired her, she collaborated with famous tango poets like Enrique Cadicamo <\/a> and Homero Manzi, who wrote tango songs for him. She but she also always remained faithful to the Canci\u00f3n Criolla, the popular song of the Province of Buenos Aires. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nelly died in 2013, at the age of 102. Now listen to everything this singing legend told me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>Interviewer: And why have they called him Gardel with a skirt?

Nelly Omar: They call me Gardel with a skirt, because in the year more or less 38, 1938, in a cinema called Carlos Gardel this\u2026 eh\u2026 I sang, I went to sing there and there the public baptized me Gardel with a skirt. The public took me out on a stretcher, because I used to do a lot of Gardel’s repertoire, which I later left behind and started doing my own repertoire. And you’re going to notice, in these latest CDs that I have, including the albums that I recorded with Canaro the same, I was already leaving Gardel’s repertoire. Because I rather sang\u2026 eh\u2026 a lot of Creole things, a lot of country things.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
